The Sturmgewehr 44: an assault rifle that changed the game for small arms weapons.
ENGLISH:
This German assault rifle was designed during WW2 by Hugo Schmeisser. With its more compact design, the Sturmgewehr 44 was definitely an improvement of the earlier design, which was the Maschinenkarabiner 42(H). It also had a higher rate of fire and was specifically designed to shoot at shorter distances, which made it easy to handle and very precise.
The Sturmgewehr 44 was first introduced to the soldiers on the field in September 1944, even though they were still quite rare back then. The MP 44 later became a commonly used rifle for the German troops during the winter of 1944, at the battle of the Bulge in the Belgian Ardennes. Even though the StG 44 was able to fire full automatically, the German soldiers were instructed to only use the full automatic mode in emergencies and only for a few short rounds.
The StG 44 was the first assault rifle which was put into such mass production at the time. Allegedly 424.000 MP 43 and MP 44 rifles were built between June 1943 and April 1945. The Sturmgewehr 44 made a huge impact in the further development of small arms weapons. The reduction of the muzzle impulse garanteed a better experience during automatic fire within short combat range.
